New AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D stock not expected until 2025, says gaming CPU retailer

There’s bad news for anyone hoping to get their hands on a new AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D gaming CPU, as the stock situation doesn’t look as though it’s going to be fixed any time soon. In fact, UK tech retailer Overclockers has decided to be straight-up honest with its customers, admitting that it’s not expecting decent stock of the new processor until next year.

We loved this new AMD chip when we benchmarked it in our Ryzen 7 9800X3D review, with its extra clock speed and Zen 5 architecture combining to make a formidable gaming CPU that can also cope with hefty multi-threaded workloads. While the 9800X3D is undoubtedly the best gaming CPU you can buy right now, limited supply means that it’s basically impossible to buy unless you’re willing to hand a silly amount of money to scalpers on eBay.

In its latest stock update, Overclockers says it’s “no longer accepting orders” for the new 9800X3D, “as we do not expect stock until early 2025.” The retailer invites customers to sign up for notifications to find out when the CPU is available to buy again. The company is expecting a couple more shipments in November and December, but they’ve already been allocated, presumably to pre-orders and Overclockers’ own system builds.

AMD declined to comment on the stock shortages when we reached out, but the CPU is sold out everywhere we’ve looked. In the US, Best Buy says it’s “working to get more inventory,” while Newegg attributes the problem to “high demand,” which the company says it “will replenish as soon as possible.”

In the meantime, several Ryzen 7 9800X3D gaming CPUs are now up on eBay for extortionate prices between $600 and $700, adding considerably to the already-high $479 asking price. If you’re looking to buy a new gaming CPU now, we recommend instead purchasing the last-gen Ryzen 7 7800X3D, or waiting for stock of the 9800X3D to stabilize.

It looks like it’s going to take a few months for the latter, though. We’re hoping that Overclockers’ “early 2025” statement means we could be able to buy the new CPU at its MSRP in January, but that may be wishful thinking if there still isn’t enough stock of the new CPUs to go around.

f you already own an old Socket AM4 Ryzen system, though, take a look at this Ryzen 7 5700X3D deal, which not only enables you to upgrade to a new X3D CPU with 3D V-cache, but you also get 32GB of Corsair RAM thrown into the bundle.

We will be happy to hear your thoughts
