There’s a new Windows 11 update bug causing game crashes, no fix available yet

There’s another Windows 11 bug out there causing havoc for gamers. Microsoft has confirmed that a bug in the latest Windows 11 24H2 update is affecting gaming PCs with Auto HDR enabled, causing several major games, including Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare, to potentially crash when the functionality is enabled, with no permanent fix available just yet.

This is yet another Microsoft setback that leaves gamers at a disadvantage, happening just a few months since Windows 11 adoption reached majority levels among the gaming community. The best gaming PCs out there might be running Windows 11, but as this recent problem proves, stability isn’t always a guarantee.

Auto HDR is a feature in Windows 11 that adds High Dynamic Range support to games that don’t otherwise support it, enhancing their color range and levels to make them appear more vibrant and lifelike. While it’s worked without issue until now, the new Windows 11 24H2 major update has caused the functionality to break.

At a minor level, this might just cause game colors to appear incorrectly, but games can also lock up and crash, leaving it unplayable. In a blog post, Microsoft recommends avoiding any manual update to the 24H2 update, while disabling automatic updates to systems that have Auto HDR enabled to temporarily mitigate the spread.

If you’ve already updated, however, there’s a quick temporary solution to stop the crashes from happening – disabling AutoHDR entirely. You can do this via the Settings menu by clicking System > Display > HDR and making sure that the Auto HDR setting is switched off. Unfortunately, Microsoft doesn’t yet have a final fix available for this issue, but it will “provide more information” once it does.

This isn’t the only 24H2 update issue to hit Windows 11. A few months ago, a Windows 11 24H2 storage bug was taking gigabytes of storage with no immediate fix. Let’s hope that this gameplay-crashing feature is one that Microsoft can resolve quickly, or it’ll risk losing gamers support in the long run.
