How to unlock the Chatterwhite shader in Destiny 2

The beloved Chatterwhite shader — an all-white shader — has finally come to Destiny 2 after years of fan requests. The shader comes from the original Destiny, and was a reward for killing Atheon, the series’ first raid boss.

In this Destiny 2 guide, we’ll walk you through how to unlock the Chatterwhite shader during the Past is Prologue Bento Box event.

Note: The Past is Prologue event only runs through Feb. 4, when the Heresy episode launches in-game. While the shader could come back in the future, make sure you move quickly if you want to pick it up before it expires.

To unlock the Chatterwhite shader in Destiny 2, first you need to pick up the “Packed Lunch” quest from the Drifter in the Tower. To complete this quest, you’ll need to “complete five Bento Boxes.” As of the time of this writing, the Drifter only has four Bento Box quests. However, there are three others available through Xur while he’s in the Tower from Friday afternoon to Tuesday morning each week. If you want Chatterwhite, you’ll need to grab at least one from Xur.

As for what Bento Boxes are, these are little quests Drifter and Xur offer which will give you special Bento Tokens. You can then take these tokens to Eris on the moon for some great rewards. The quest objectives range from killing some dungeon/raid bosses to just doing activities on the Moon.

Here are the currently available Bento Boxes quests:

  • The Stuff of Legends”: Finish final encounters in any raid or dungeon. Raids provide additional progress (two dungeons or one raid required, 2x Bento Tokens rewarded)
  • Martial Mementos”: Get final blows with Malfeasance, Witherhoard, Touch of Malice, Whisper of the Worm, Xenophage, or Arbalest. (1x Bento Token rewarded)
  • A Dubious Bento”: Collect Dubious Celery from defeated targets in Gambit, and collect Century Eggs from defeated combatants on the Moon. (10 of each resource, 1x Bento Token rewarded)
  • Nightmare Lunch”: Complete activities on the Moon. Bonus progress for Nightmare Hunts. (60 activities completed, 1x Bento Token rewarded)
  • Dredgens of Yore” (Xur exclusive): Kill Guardians in the Crucible or Gambit. Invader kills with hand cannons give bonus progress (50 kills, 1x Bento Token rewarded)
  • Nightmare Kills” (Xur exclusive): Defeat Nightmare bosses (Nightmare Lost Sectors count) and challenging combatants (3 bosses total, 1x Bento Token rewarded)
  • Snakebite” (Xur exclusive): Get kills with Gambit weapons (1x Bento Token rewarded)

Best Bento Box quest order to get Chatterwhite

While the Bento Token rewards are great, Chatterwhite is what most Destiny fans really want from this event. If that’s all you care about, you just need to complete the five fastest Bento Box quests and claim those Bento Tokens to get the shader.

The “easiest” Bento Boxes are a based on personal preference, as your skill level and interest in modes like PvP/Gambit will dictate what that looks like for you. So we’re going to assume that you’re willing to play modes out of your comfort zone in order to get this shader quickly.

Here are the fastest Bento Box quests, for which we’ll explain a bit of our thinking below:

  • “Nightmare Kills”
  • “A Dubious Bento”
  • “Martial Mementos”
  • “The Stuff of Legends”
  • “Snakebite”

Nightmare Kills” is by far the fastest Bento quest, and you can complete it in a single run of “The Weep” Lost Sector in the EDZ. Just kill the Nightmare enemies in there and you’ll finish this one before you even open the chest.

A Dubious Bento” does require a Gambit game to complete, but the resources drop so quickly that you’ll be done before you’re even halfway through your first match. You can get the Moon resources collected during a single public event.

Martial Mementos” is going to take some time if it’s the only thing you’re focusing on, but the weapons it asks you to use are pretty strong, so if you use something like Malfeasance while doing the rest of these Bento Quests, you’ll complete it before you’re done. We were able to complete this in a single Vesper’s Host run, before reaching the final boss.

The Stuff of Legends” is going to seem like a difficult one, and will be difficult if you don’t normally do dungeons or raids. However, with the in-game Fireteam Finder and a ton of LFGs online, you can get into one of the easier dungeon bosses, like the Kell Echo, or even an easy raid boss, like Taniks, and knock this out in just one or two kills. It takes more organizing and socializing, but it’s extremely fast.

Snakebite” isn’t exactly a fast one, but it’s another one that you can do while you’re doing something else, like “The Stuff of Legends.” Once you’re done with your “Martial Mementos” kills, swap to Breakneck or Hush and get slaying. If you’re confident in your PvP skills, this is one we’d recommend you swap out for “Dredgens of Yore.”
