Everything old is new again, at least if you’re a fan of the beige box PCs of yesteryear. If you are, then you’ll be pleased to learn that the Silverstone FLP01 PC case is already starting to appear in stores in the U.S. and Japan, ready for your next retro gaming PC build. However, initial stock appears to be limited, at least for the time being.
Horizontal, beige PC cases like this Silverstone design haven’t been seen in the best gaming PCs for decades, and we’re not expecting a huge resurgence with this launch. That said, for gamers of a certain vintage, there’s a charm to building a top-spec PC in a case like this one. It throws into the trash the modern aesthetics and RGB found in most of the latest best PC cases, instead opting for a much more traditional design.
As to when you can get hold of this new case, according to a report by Japanese website Akiba PC Hotline that was shared in a post on X (formerly Twitter), the Silverstone FLP01 will be released to the public in Japan on February 28, with at least one Japanese store taking pre-orders from February 21.
Priced at 21,780 yen, this converts to around $145, which is just over $15 more than the initial $129.99 MSRP confirmed by Silverstone when it announced the case. We’re also seeing some stock already appear for sale at some local U.S. retailers, including this retailer with stores in the San Francisco Bay Area, priced at $139.99.
That’s also the price mentioned in a comment added to a recent Linus Tech Tips video (via it’s Short Circuit channel), suggesting that the MSRP price has been increased to $139.99 to cover potential U.S. tariff costs.
Stock listings for the Silverstone FLP01 are also appearing in other countries, including at CCL Computers in the UK and Scorptec in Australia, and although it isn’t yet on sale at those retailers, you can register your interest. According to a discussion post on Reddit, a Redditor claims that Silverstone informed them that FLP01 stock is expected to become more widely available “any day now,” at least in the United States, although the initial stock will be limited.
The first Silverstone FLP01 prototype, built following an April fool’s joke on X in 2024, was showcased at a Japanese expo back in November 2024. With the same design and specs as the prototype, this retro Silverstone case is big enough to fit an ATX motherboard, a CPU cooler with a maximum height of 136mm, and expansion cards (i.e. a graphics card) of up to 309 x 133mm. That’s relatively compact but still leaves plenty of room for top-spec hardware.
The case follows many of the design aspects you’d see from a PC from the 1990s. There are two fake 5.25-inch floppy drive bay panels, with the top panel hiding space for an optical drive. The lower bay, meanwhile, hides your I/O, with two USB-A ports, a USB-C port, and a headphone jack included. Inside the case, you’ve got space for several hard drives and SSDs, with Silverstone throwing in one 120mm fan for cooling.
I must admit, I’m a big fan of this design. It isn’t for everyone, but it’s a big call back to the PCs that I grew up with as a kid in the 1990s. Most gamers aren’t going to choose it for their next gaming PC build, but I can already imagine some of the impressive specs that some builders will want to jam into a case like this one.
Silverstone is a brand you’ll often see at bigger retailers like Amazon and Newgg, so with any luck, we’ll start to see this Silverstone case appear on those sites soon.
