If you’ve just updated your Nvidia driver, your gaming GPU needs this download

Nvidia has just issued a new driver hotfix to correct a problem that has been plaguing Nvidia GeForce GPU users over the last week. Following a new Nvidia driver release timed to coincide with the RTX 5070 Ti launch, users having been experiencing their PCs occasionally booting to a blank screen. However, Nvidia has acted quickly to release a new version of its driver that should fix the issue.

The black screen problem that has been affecting Nvidia GPUs isn’t limited to those lucky enough to get hold of the new RTX 5000 series cards. Instead, we’ve seen reports from users saying that their RTX 4000 series and RTX 2000 cards have been hit by the problem too. Thankfully, though, the fix is just a download away.

The specific circumstances of the peculiar issue are that users must be using a DisplayPort connection and it will only affect certain monitors. So, if you switch to an HDMI video output or try a different monitor, you may be able to avoid the problem, at least for long enough to get the new driver installed.

Nvidia announced the hotfix via its website with the company saying the fix addresses the issue of “PC may boot to a black screen when connected via DisplayPort with certain monitors.” The posting goes on to note that the release is designated a hotfix as it addresses just one issue and is being released out of alignment with its usual driver release schedule. It is effectively, though, just a new driver install just like any other.

You can download the hotfix, which is for Windows 10 and 11 users only and is designated as driver number 572.65, via this link.

This new blank screen problem is just the latest in a growing line of mishaps that have beset the launch of Nvidia’s latest GPUs. Not only has availability of the range been low, with RTX 5090 stock vanishingly thin and even RTX 5080 stock and RTX 5070 Ti stock selling out fast too, but RTX 5090 power cables have also been melting, in a reoccurrence of an issue that first affected the RTX 4090.

Thankfully, while the melting power cable and low stock problems look set to be ongoing, this new hotfix means this latest addition to the RTX 5000 series launch saga will be a short-lived one.
