While gamers have been struggling to get their hands on a new Nvidia GeForce RTX 5000 GPU, it looks as though you’ll have a much easier time buying a new AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT when it’s released. According to the latest whispers, stock of the new 9070 cards is significantly better than any of the RTX 5000 cards.
The AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT release date is coming very soon, and with a price of $599 it looks set to offer some serious competition for the Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070, with more VRAM and some big numbers in the specs list. Perhaps more importantly in a world where Nvidia commands a massive share of the GPU market and brand recognition, though, AMD could win this battle simply by having enough stock of its new graphics cards to go round.
I can confirm that the situation is looking good for AMD. I’ve spoken to several tech retailers, all of whom describe situations with tiny stock of the RTX 5070, and much better stock of the new AMD GPUs. One large etailer who wanted to remain anonymous told me off the record that Radeon RX 9070 XT stock “is much healthier than individual 50-series models,” but said they “wouldn’t go that far” about rumors that supply of the new GPU outnumbers the whole RTX 5000 series. Even so, it’s looking like a much better situation for AMD than Nvidia right now when it comes to supply.
The rumors about 9070 stock outnumbering the whole RTX 5000 series stems from a post on X (formerly Twitter) by YouTube channel Hardware Unboxed, which states, “If you see 9070 XT’s sold out shortly after release, it will mean retailers will have sold more 9070 XT’s than all GeForce 50 series GPUs combined.” The post also adds that these figures include RTX 5070 stock.
That’s backed up by tech site Hardware Canucks in a later post, which states that a retail manager told the site that “they’re sitting on more XT’s than they had 5000-series cards so far.”
Worryingly, Hardware Canucks also says that there are “just 15x RTX 5070 cards expected to arrive at his location in the next two weeks unless something drastic changes.” That’s really bad news for RTX 5070 supply if it’s true, and whether the Radeon RX 9070 cards are faster or not, the fact that you can actually buy them will be massively in their favor.
AMD has reportedly also had a few months to get supply onto store shelves, with Radeon RX 9070 stock apparently already being in retail warehouses for weeks, while AMD delayed the launch to work out the price. While that’s all based on rumor, if those reports are true, then it would have bought AMD some time to get more cards into stores ready for launch.
We expect demand for all these GPUs to be high, though, and if there’s barely any stock of the RTX 5070 available, there’s a chance all the Radeon RX 9070 cards will soon get snapped up as well. Let’s hope that at least some gamers manage to get hold of one of these new mid-range GPUs for a fair price.
