Modders just unlocked AMD FSR 4 in loads of games, including Cyberpunk 2077

AMD recently released its new FSR 4 upscaling technology alongside its new RDNA 4 gaming GPUs, and modders have already figured out a way to get this new upscaling tech working in just about any game that already has Nvidia DLSS included.

AMD FSR 4 requires a Radeon 9000 series GPU, and you can read all about the latest one in our RX 9070 XT review. Not only is it one of the best graphics cards that money can buy, but it is applying some serious pressure on Nvidia amidst that company’s ongoing stock and performance issues for its RTX 5000 GPUs.

If you’ve managed to get your hands on an RX 9070 or RX 9070 XT, you can download the Optiscaler mod to add AMD FSR 4 into any game that already has support for Nvidia DLSS version 2 or later.

As you can see in the above video, when AMD FSR 4 is enabled on the Performance setting, there is a huge difference in the image quality compared to FSR 3.1. These tests were run at a 4K resolution, meaning the rendered resolution is actually 1080p and the image is then upscaled using the improved machine learning-powered technology back to 4K.

This new AI-powered upscaling is exclusive to AMD’s latest RDNA 4 GPUs such as the RX 9070, which you can read more about in our RX 9070 review. Its retention of quality in images is a remarkable step up from older versions of FSR, as you can see in the side-by-side comparison.

This test shows that FSR is drawing closer to the upscaling performance of DLSS, although, in the above clips, the frame rates drop when upscaling is enabled. This could be in part due to FSR 4 not being natively available and instead added in through the mod. Frame generation is also disabled in the above tests.

Potentially confusing is that AMD FSR 4 support doesn’t just come from inside games where it’s available in the settings menu. Instead, you may sometimes have to enable it via AMD Software Adrenaline Editon in any game that supports the tech but doesn’t yet have the option available in the settings menu.
